The fruit production center developed in many provinces in Indonesia is facing a serious problems of fruit fly pests, mainly of Bactrocera dorsalis complex, consisting of B. carambolae (Drew & Hancock) and B. papayae. An appropriate measure to control fruit fly pests, capable of dispersing long distance, in a hundrets hectare of production center, by using an area-wide intergated pest managemant (AW-IPM), integrating the sterile insect technique (SIT) with other compatible methode. Lebak Bulus Raya 49, Jakarta Selatan anakuswa@hotmail ABSTRACT Mango, a horticultural crop, has been extensively cultivated in production centers of many provinces in Indonesia, and the products are exported to increase the provinces’ and national income. However, mango cultivation is facing serious problems of fruit fly pest, that are not only reduce the quantity and the quality of the fruits, but also, as a quarantine pest, become an obstacle to the export. Irradiation techniques could be used to solve such proplems. Sterile insect technique (SIT), by releasing radiosterilized pest, can be used to control the fruit fly pest in the field. When the conditions are suitable, since the SIT can be used to eradicate the pest in an area, a fuit fly free area is possible to be developed.
